A Real Story
I’d just paid for three months of a premium app and gotten exactly one date, a guy who talked about his ex’s lasagna for forty minutes. So I canceled it, felt petty and broke, and made a profile on a free site instead, the kind with banner ads and a layout that looked like it hadn’t been updated since 2011. My bio was half-joking, something about how I collect ceramic frogs and cannot parallel park. I figured I’d get ignored or get spam.
Instead I got a message from a guy named Nathan that just said, “How many frogs are we talking, exactly, and do they have names.” That was it. No hey beautiful, no opening line copy-pasted from a list. We texted about the frogs for two days before he asked me to get pancakes at a diner near the highway, the kind with laminated menus and a jukebox that only played half its songs. He showed up fifteen minutes early and had already picked a booth by the window because I’d mentioned once, in passing, that I liked watching people in parking lots.
The free site was clunky, honestly, half the profiles were inactive and the messaging system logged me out constantly. But it filtered for something the expensive app never did, people willing to put up with a little friction to actually talk to a stranger. Nathan and I have been together two years now. I still have the frogs. He named two of them.
