Facebook Dating: The Setup Guide Nobody Bothers to Write Properly

What Facebook Dating Actually Is
It’s not a separate app you download. Facebook Dating lives inside the main Facebook app, tucked behind a heart-shaped icon, and it runs on a completely separate profile from your regular Facebook page. Your dating profile doesn’t show your last name, your friend list isn’t automatically visible to matches, and by default none of your existing Facebook friends see you on there. That last point trips people up constantly — they assume opting in means their coworkers or cousins will suddenly see their dating profile pop up. They won’t, unless you specifically add them as people you want suggested to.
The tradeoff for that privacy is a feature set that’s less polished than Tinder or Hinge. There’s no algorithm sorting by ‘most compatible,’ no read receipts drama, and as of now, no paid subscription tier — everything is free. If you’re tired of hitting paywalls on other apps, that alone might be reason enough to try it.
Setting Up Your Profile (Step by Step)
- Find it: Open Facebook, tap the hamburger menu (three lines) or the heart icon if you have it on the main nav bar. On desktop, go to facebook.com/dating.
- Confirm your age and location: You need to be 18+, and availability varies by region — if you don’t see the option, check for an app update first before assuming it’s not offered where you live.
- Build a profile from scratch, not your Facebook photos: You can pull from your camera roll or Instagram, but resist the urge to reuse your main profile picture. Pick 5-9 photos that don’t already exist on your public Facebook, since some matches will absolutely search your name afterward.
- Answer the prompts: Facebook gives you optional prompt questions similar to Hinge. Skip generic ones like ‘Two truths and a lie’ unless you’re going to write something genuinely funny — a blank answer is better than a boring one.
- Set your preferences: Age range, distance, and gender preferences are all adjustable in Settings within the Dating tab. Review these immediately — the defaults are wider than most people expect.
How Matching Actually Works Here
There’s no swipe deck in the Tinder sense. You scroll through profiles one at a time and tap a heart to like or an X to pass. If two people like each other, it opens a chat. What makes Facebook Dating different is the discovery pool: it can pull in people from Facebook Groups you’re both in and Events you’ve both marked ‘interested’ in, if you opt into that in your settings under ‘Add Me To Groups & Events Dating.’
This is the single most underused feature. If you’re in a hiking group, a local trivia night group, or a city-specific Facebook community, turning this on puts you in front of people who already share a real, verifiable interest — not just a shared radius on a map. It’s a much better filter than most swiping apps offer for free.
The Secret Crush Feature, Explained Properly
Secret Crush lets you list up to nine people — either Facebook friends or Instagram followers — that you’re interested in without them ever knowing, unless they list you back too. If they add your name to their own Secret Crush list, Facebook notifies both of you and opens a match. If they don’t, nothing happens and no one is notified.
The catch: you need their exact Facebook name or Instagram handle, and it has to match precisely. Use this on people you already know casually — the friend of a friend you met at a wedding, someone from your gym class — not strangers, since it only works on mutual connections in the first place.
Common Mistakes That Make Profiles Invisible
- Leaving prompts blank: An empty profile reads as a fake or abandoned account to most users scrolling fast.
- Reusing your main Facebook profile photo: It makes you instantly searchable and undercuts the privacy this app is supposed to offer.
- Ignoring the Groups/Events opt-in: Skipping this cuts you off from the feature that actually differentiates this app from every other swiping platform.
- Setting distance too narrow: Unless you live in a dense city, a 10-mile radius can leave you with almost no one to see some weeks.
Safety Features Worth Actually Using
Facebook Dating has a built-in ‘Share Date Plans’ tool — go to a match’s profile, tap the three dots, and select the option to share your date’s time, location, and the person’s profile with a friend or family member for a set window. It shares your live location during that window too. Use it every time you meet someone new in person, even for a casual coffee. It takes under a minute and costs you nothing, which is more than most apps offer without a premium upsell.
Is It Worth Using?
If you already spend time in Facebook Groups tied to real hobbies or your city, this app gives you a genuinely different matching pool than the usual swiping apps, and it costs nothing. If your Facebook use is minimal or your friend network barely overlaps with your dating pool, you’ll likely get more consistent volume from a dedicated app. It’s worth trying for a couple of weeks before writing it off — the Groups and Events integration especially rewards patience over instant gratification.
