A Real Story
My husband and I had been married nine years when I found the Feeld app icon buried in his phone, unopened, downloaded three weeks earlier and never touched. Instead of the fight I expected to have, I downloaded it too, and that night we sat on opposite ends of the couch filling out our ‘desires’ list like it was a job application neither of us wanted to admit we needed. His had ‘watching’ checked. Mine had ‘group’ and ‘women.’ We’d never said either of those words out loud to each other in nine years.
We made a joint profile first, which the app makes almost embarrassingly easy, and got exactly the kind of messages you’d expect — men who wanted to skip straight to logistics, a couple in Austin who ghosted after four days of promising conversation. What actually changed things was a woman named the same as my aunt, mid-thirties, who asked us point blank in the chat whether we were looking for a unicorn to fix something broken or exploring something we both genuinely wanted. Neither of us had a good answer, so we closed the app for six weeks and just talked to each other instead.
When we came back to it, we’d stopped looking for a third and started using it more like — I don’t know, a mirror. We’d swipe separately, then compare notes over coffee, and I found out my husband has wanted to be tied up since before he met me, something twelve years of marriage never surfaced on its own. We did eventually meet someone through the app, briefly, and it was fine, forgettable even. The real relationship Feeld gave us was the one we already had, just with the lights turned on.
