I applied to Raya twice and got rejected both times before a friend who works in music vouched for me on the inside, and even then it took almost six weeks to hear back. I remember making the intro video three separate times because I kept overthinking what would read as ‘interesting’ to whoever was on the other end of that review process. When the approval email finally came I texted four people before I even opened my new profile card.

I matched with a guy who ran a small gallery downtown, the kind with exposed brick and a show opening every few weeks that showed up on my Explore page constantly. Our first date was at a wine bar in Silver Lake, and within the first twenty minutes he’d mentioned his follower count twice and asked, unprompted, what I ‘did content-wise.’ I laughed it off because he was objectively charming and the wine was good, but by the second glass I noticed he kept angling his phone toward our table like he was framing a shot he hadn’t asked permission to take.

The next morning he posted a story from the bar, our two wine glasses in frame, my hand just visible at the edge, captioned something about ‘good company.’ I wasn’t tagged. I wasn’t named. I was set dressing for an aesthetic he was building, and it clicked all at once why the app makes you wait weeks and prove your curator-approved worth just to get in the room: half the people inside aren’t there to meet someone, they’re there to be seen meeting someone.

I deleted it about a month later, not because I met somebody else, but because I got tired of feeling like a guest star in other people’s brand strategy. If you’re chasing Raya for the exclusivity, fine, but go in knowing the velvet rope selects for image-conscious people first and romantic ones a distant second.
