A Real Story
I gave Coffee Meets Bagel exactly the three weeks its own marketing promised before I’d see ‘quality matches,’ and for eighteen days straight my noon bagel was either a guy holding a fish or someone whose only photo was a car. I almost deleted the app on a Tuesday, sitting in my work parking lot eating an actual bagel, which felt insulting.
Then Dev showed up. His profile answer to ‘last text you sent’ was just: MOM CALL ME BACK IT’S URGENT, all caps, no context. I needed to know what happened. Turns out his mother had texted him about a Tupperware container she couldn’t find, and he’d panicked for nothing. We messaged for two days about nothing important — his terrible fantasy football team, my inability to parallel park — before he asked if I wanted to actually get bagels, which felt like the only correct move.
We met at a real bagel shop in Astoria, the kind with laminate counters and a guy yelling order numbers. He got lox he clearly couldn’t afford on a first date and split it with me without making it a thing. I remember thinking the algorithm had done exactly one thing right in three weeks, and it happened to be the only thing that mattered.
We’ve been together a year and a half now, and he still can’t find that Tupperware.
