A Real Story
I downloaded Stir after three straight months of Bumble matches ghosting the second I mentioned I had a 7-year-old and a 4-year-old. On regular apps I felt like I was apologizing for my own life. Stir let me put my custody schedule right in my profile — every other week, Thursday to Thursday — and instead of scaring guys off, it filtered out the ones who weren’t actually built for this. That’s how I found Dan, a divorced dad with joint custody of his son on the exact opposite schedule as mine.
Our first date was scheduled for a Tuesday, my one guaranteed kid-free evening, and forty minutes before he was supposed to pick me up my daughter spiked a fever of 102 at her dad’s place and I had to go get her. I texted Dan half-expecting silence back. Instead he said, ‘Go get your kid, we’ll get coffee whenever works,’ and then followed up three days later asking how she was doing. Nobody on a regular app had ever remembered a detail like that, let alone asked about it unprompted.
We rescheduled twice more before we actually had an uninterrupted dinner, and by then I already half-knew I liked him, because he’d shown me exactly how he handled chaos instead of just telling me he was ‘flexible.’ It took another four months before our kids met, on a Saturday at a splash pad with zero pressure and an easy exit if it went badly. It didn’t go badly. My daughter now asks when ‘Dan’s boy’ is coming over, and I’ve stopped feeling like being a parent is a disclaimer I have to attach to my dating profile.
