I’m an operations analyst, so when my roommate dared me to ‘just try a hookup app already,’ I did what I do at work: I built a spreadsheet. Seven apps, tracked over five weeks — cost per month, number of matches, number of actual replies, and whether the date (if it happened) matched the photos. Column headers and everything. My roommate thought it was insane. My data said otherwise.

The app everyone online swears is ‘the best hookup site’ had the most matches but the worst reply rate — like 4%, mostly ghosts who liked my profile then vanished. A smaller, less-hyped app with a genuinely weird icon had a 22% reply rate and led to three actual dates in three weeks. One of those dates, a guy named Danny who did lighting for local theater productions, showed up in the exact jacket from his third photo, ordered the same weird cocktail he’d joked about in his bio, and it turned into four months of something that started as casual and definitely didn’t stay that way.

The spreadsheet still exists. I update it sometimes out of habit, mostly to prove to my roommate I was right. The real lesson wasn’t which app ‘won’ — it’s that the sites everyone calls the best are usually just the most crowded, and crowded isn’t the same as good odds. I’d rather have fewer matches who actually type back than a hundred who never do.
