A Real Story
I typed ‘hookup apps near me’ into my phone the way you’d Google a late-night pizza place — fast, half-thinking, no real plan. I downloaded the first app that came up, made a profile in about four minutes, and matched with a guy named Dev who worked in HVAC repair and had a bio that just said ‘not looking for anything serious, same.’ Perfect, I thought. That’s exactly my speed after a brutal breakup and a work week that ate my whole soul.
We met at a dive bar off Route 9 that smelled like fryer oil and old carpet. He was charming in that easy, low-effort way, and we ended up back at his apartment two hours later. Around 6 a.m. his phone rang loud enough to wake both of us, and he answered groggily with ‘hey Ma’ before realizing I was still there and scrambling out of bed like the room was on fire. Turns out Dev was 24, still living with his parents technically but crashing at a buddy’s place, and had told his mother he was staying with his sister that night.
Nothing scandalous happened after that, honestly — we laughed about it over gas station coffee and never spoke again. But it recalibrated something for me. I’d swiped through his profile in under a minute without checking a single detail that actually mattered, because the app made it so frictionless I stopped thinking of him as a full person until his mom’s ringtone reminded me he was somebody’s kid.
Now when I use apps for anything casual, I actually read bios, ask two real questions before meeting, and pick a public spot with an exit plan I control. The apps aren’t the problem — my autopilot was. Being near someone geographically was never the same as being ready to actually meet them.
