I met Dev through a work friend’s group chat, not an app, which already broke the vibe I was going for. We were both fresh out of relationships that had swallowed us whole, so we made a deal over beer number three: no titles, no meeting each other’s people, no texting before noon, and absolutely no talking about “us.” Just dinner every other Tuesday at the ramen place on 9th, then his place, then home by 1 a.m. because I had a 7 a.m. spin class I never actually went to.

For four months it worked exactly like we’d designed it. I liked that I could cancel without guilt if my sister needed me, that I never had to explain him to my roommates, that there was no anniversary looming to stress about. He kept a spare toothbrush at his place for me, not because it meant anything, he said, just because he was tired of me borrowing his.

Then one Tuesday he canceled for a work trip and I found myself annoyed in a way that had nothing to do with ramen. I noticed I’d stopped seeing other people around month three without ever deciding to. I brought it up carefully, expecting him to bolt, and instead he admitted he’d deleted the apps back in February and just never mentioned it because mentioning it felt like breaking our rule.

We’re not “official” even now, honestly, we still don’t use the word, but we’ve met each other’s parents and he canceled a bachelor party trip for my birthday without me asking. What I learned is that no-commitment dating doesn’t actually protect you from catching feelings, it just delays the conversation about what you do once you have them.
