A Real Story
I deleted every dating app in late 2025 after a string of matches who looked nothing like their photos, and only came back because a coworker wouldn’t stop talking about this new app that makes you record a 60-second unedited video before you can even see anyone’s profile. No filters, no retakes after three tries, no music overlay. Mine was me sitting in my car in a Target parking lot talking about how I’d just bought a waffle iron I didn’t need. Not exactly smooth, but apparently that’s the point now.
The algorithm paired me with a guy named on his profile as “Recovering perfectionist, owns too many houseplants,” and his video was him mid-argument with his cat about knocking a fern off the windowsill. We matched on a Sunday night in February 2026, and instead of the usual week of small talk, the app locks your chat to voice notes only for the first 48 hours, no texting. So I heard his actual laugh before I ever saw a second photo of him. It felt backwards from every app I’d used before, and also weirdly less exhausting, because I wasn’t performing.
We met in person nine days after matching, at a diner because neither of us wanted to commit to a whole dinner if it was awkward. It wasn’t. He brought the same fern from the video, said it survived the cat, and I still have a photo of it on my kitchen windowsill now. Five months in, I still can’t fully explain why a 60-second unfiltered video did more for me than four years of curated profiles, except that I stopped performing before I even met him, and so did he.
