My “I’ll fall for you if” prompt on Hinge said “you can parallel park in under three tries,” which is a genuinely bad joke I wrote at midnight after two glasses of wine and forgot about. Six weeks later a guy named the prompt in his opener, not with a compliment, just “three tries is generous, most people can’t do it in ten.” No emoji, no exclamation point, just a flat correction, and for some reason that landed harder than any “hey you’re cute” ever had.

We texted about parking garages for two days, which sounds like nothing to write home about, but it meant our first date was already weird and specific instead of the usual small talk about what neighborhood we each live in. He picked a diner near Fort Greene that had exactly four booths and made me actually parallel park on the street while he timed me on his phone, laughing the whole time because I clipped the curb. I did it in four tries. He said that was acceptable.

We’ve been together sixteen months now, and he still brings up the four tries whenever he wants to win an argument about literally anything unrelated to driving. I deleted the app the week after that date, mostly because I didn’t want to see what other unhinged prompt answers I’d written that he might use against me later. Turns out the dumb, specific answer worked way better than the safe one I almost swapped it for.
