A Real Story
I’d never heard of Dora until my coworker mentioned she’d matched with someone who canceled twice, so I downloaded it mostly to have something to complain about at lunch. The app felt smaller than the big names, fewer profiles to scroll through, but the ones that were there felt like actual people instead of gym mirror selfies with no captions. I matched with a guy named Theo who had a photo of himself losing badly at bowling, which is the kind of self-deprecating humor I can’t resist.
We texted for four days before meeting, mostly about how he’d once tried to fix his own dishwasher and flooded his kitchen. I mentioned offhand that I’d been fighting a cold all week and probably shouldn’t drink coffee before we met. He showed up to our date at a bookstore cafe with a thermos of soup his mom had made, still warm, because he said he didn’t want me sitting there miserable just to be polite. I laughed so hard the barista asked if I was okay.
We’ve been together seven months now, and I still tease him about the thermos, but it’s become our thing — whenever one of us is sick, soup shows up on the doorstep. I went into Dora expecting the same recycled small talk I’d had on every other app, and instead got someone who actually listened to a throwaway comment and did something about it. That’s the whole story, honestly: not the app, just the guy who paid attention.
