I got laid off in February and made myself a rule: no subscriptions, no boosts, no paying to see who liked me. Just the free version of whatever app, one swipe at a time. On OkCupid that meant answering a stupid number of compatibility questions instead of paying for filters, and on Hinge it meant I got exactly one ‘like’ a day if I didn’t want to shell out, so I got picky fast — no more matching with everyone just because I could.

The woman I ended up with, Priya, I actually found through OkCupid’s free messaging, back when I’d basically given up and was just answering questions for fun at 1am. She’d written a whole paragraph about how her apartment’s ice maker had been broken for eight months and she refused to buy bagged ice on principle, she just used warm tap water and suffered. I sent her one line: ‘This is either the funniest or saddest thing I’ve read all week.’ She wrote back within twenty minutes.

We texted for four days before meeting, mostly about her ice maker crusade and my unemployment spreadsheet, which I was weirdly proud of. First date was cheap ramen because neither of us had money to burn, and she paid for her half in quarters she’d been saving for laundry, which should have embarrassed her and didn’t. That was eleven months ago. I still haven’t paid for a single subscription, and her ice maker is still broken — I offered to fix it once and she said fixing it would ruin the bit.

What I’d tell anyone trying this the cheap way: the free tier forces you to actually read profiles instead of mindlessly swiping, because you don’t have unlimited attempts. That constraint is annoying at first and then it’s the whole point.
