I moved to Tulsa for a nursing job and knew exactly zero queer people in the city. Tinder kept giving me straight guys who put ‘bi girls welcome ;)’ in their bios like it was a selling point, and Bumble wasn’t much better. A coworker mentioned Taimi almost as an aside, said her cousin used it in Chicago, so I downloaded it more out of boredom than hope during a night shift lull.

The difference was immediate in a small way that mattered a lot — I could actually set my orientation and see people who matched it back, instead of getting filtered into some generic ‘women’ bucket with men sliding in anyway. I matched with a physical therapist named J. who had a profile picture of her holding a comically large burrito and a bio that just said “ask me about the burrito.” I did. The story was mediocre. I asked her out anyway.

We met at a dive bar that does trivia on Wednesdays, and she showed up fifteen minutes late wearing scrubs she clearly hadn’t changed out of, apologizing about a patient who wouldn’t stop talking about his grandkids. Our team came in second place because I confidently answered “Belgium” to a question about Amsterdam. Neither of us cared. We’ve been going to that same trivia night for four months now, and last week the bartender started bringing our drinks without us ordering.

What got me wasn’t some algorithm magic, it was just not having to explain myself in the first three messages. That’s worth more to me than any of the filters other apps advertise.
