I’m the kind of person who reads a text message and then answers it four days later, so Bumble’s whole “women message first within 24 hours” thing felt like it was designed specifically to torture me. I matched with a guy named the equivalent of Dave (not his real name, but close enough in vibe) because his second photo was him standing next to a kayak that was clearly too small for him, grinning like an idiot. I started typing something about how the kayak looked like it belonged to a child. Then my phone died at 34%, which should be impossible, and by the time I found a charger in my junk drawer I had less than an hour left on the clock.

I sent the message anyway, half-panicked, no clever opener, just “that kayak looks like it’s for a 10 year old and I need to know the story.” He wrote back in about six minutes flat and it turned out the kayak belonged to his niece and he’d tried to use it on a dare at a lake in Wisconsin and nearly tipped in front of his entire extended family. We spent the next two hours trading increasingly embarrassing childhood stories until well past midnight, and I remember thinking, this is the first time an app conversation has felt like an actual conversation instead of an interview.

We met four days later at a coffee shop that turned out to be closed for renovations, so we ended up getting gas station coffee and walking around a random neighborhood for two hours because neither of us wanted to just leave. It’s been a year and a half now and he still brings up the kayak like it’s some kind of miracle we survived. Honestly, I think the countdown timer saved us from my own overthinking — if I’d had unlimited time, I would’ve drafted seventeen versions of that message and probably talked myself out of sending any of them.
