A Real Story
Back in 2013 my POF inbox looked like a crime scene. I’d get twenty messages a day and eighteen of them were some version of “hey beautiful” or a guy’s headless torso pic with the caption “6’2, DTF, no drama.” I almost deleted the app three separate times. What kept me scrolling was pure stubbornness — I’d already invested a Saturday writing a decent profile and I refused to let it go to waste.
Then this guy named Route messaged me — not his real name, obviously, that was just his username, some inside joke about a highway he’d broken down on once. His opener wasn’t smooth at all. He asked if the taco place in my profile photo was the one on Fig Street, because he’d had food poisoning there in 2009 and wanted to know if it had gotten better. It was so specific and so weirdly unromantic that I actually laughed out loud on my couch. We texted about tacos for two days before he asked me out, and he picked a diner instead of a bar, which felt like a small act of confidence I wasn’t used to seeing on that app.
On the actual date he showed up twelve minutes early and was reading a paperback in his car so he wouldn’t seem too eager standing at the door. He told me that later, months in, like it was embarrassing. We got married in a backyard three years after that first message about tacos, and his best man’s toast opened with “let’s talk about Fig Street.” POF gets a bad reputation for being a dumping ground, and honestly, most of it deserved that reputation. But if you’re patient enough to ignore the noise, apparently one weird food-poisoning question can turn into a whole marriage.
