I’m the kind of person who color-codes things, so in early 2022 I made a spreadsheet with a tab for each app: Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, and one I’d downloaded on a whim called Coffee Meets Bagel. Columns for first message quality, whether we made it to a second date, and a blunt “waste of time (Y/N)” field. Six months in, the data was ugly — Tinder had a 0% second-date rate across eleven matches, which honestly tracked with how I felt using it.

Hinge was different almost immediately, not because the matches were better-looking, but because the prompts forced actual sentences out of people. A guy named Theo answered “the way to win me over is” with “tell me the plot of a movie badly, on purpose,” and I couldn’t not message him. Our first date was supposed to be forty minutes for coffee before his shift; we sat in his car in a Trader Joe’s parking lot for two hours afterward because neither of us wanted to be the one who left first.

What the spreadsheet eventually showed me was less about the app and more about what I was doing wrong on the others — I’d been swiping fast and writing lazy openers because the format encouraged it. Hinge just made it harder to phone it in, and so did I. Theo and I have been together nineteen months now, and the spreadsheet, embarrassingly, still exists, its last row highlighted green.
