I deleted Hinge for the first time after a guy replied to my ‘worst culinary opinion’ prompt with just a thumbs up emoji. The second time was after three straight weeks of matches who opened with ‘hey’ and nothing else. I told myself I was done with the whole prompt-based format entirely, so I tried a couple of the apps people say are just like it — Coffee Meets Bagel for a month, then back to Hinge because at least the photo layout didn’t feel like a slot machine.

What actually turned things around wasn’t a new app, it was changing my own prompts. I swapped out the generic ‘two truths and a lie’ for ‘a shower thought I recently had’ and wrote something dumb about how cereal is just soup for children. A guy named the specific brand of cereal he’d eat it with and asked if I was Team Milk First or Team Cereal First, which is somehow the most interesting question anyone had asked me in four months of swiping.

We argued about cereal logistics for two days before he asked me to an actual diner instead of the standard coffee-shop default, and ordered pancakes at 8pm like it was breakfast, which I respected. I’m not going to pretend one good prompt fixes an app that can feel exhausting most days, but it reminded me the format only works if you actually use it instead of copy-pasting whatever’s trending on your feed that week.

We’ve been together five months now, and he still brings up the cereal thing whenever I complain about being hungry at odd hours. I’ve recommended the same trick — write one weird, specific thing instead of a safe one — to three friends since, and two of them have actual second dates to show for it.
