I’m an engineer, so when my buddy told me to just ‘get on some apps,’ I did what I do with everything else confusing: I built a spreadsheet. Five apps, six months, columns for cost, response rate, number of first dates, and whether a first date turned into a second one. I felt ridiculous the first week and vindicated by month three.

Bumble gave me the most matches but the worst follow-through — women opened conversations, then went quiet after two or three messages, over and over. Coffee Meets Bagel was slower but felt more intentional, though the pool in my city was small enough that I ran out of profiles by week five. Hinge, which I’d dismissed as basic, actually had the highest ratio of first date to second date, something like 60 percent by my own sloppy math, because the prompts made people show a little personality before I ever messaged them.

The woman I’m still seeing came from Hinge, and what got me to message her wasn’t a photo, it was a prompt where she’d written that her red flag is ‘I will absolutely time you if you say you’ll be there in five minutes.’ I told her I once made someone wait forty minutes and she should probably block me. She didn’t. We’ve been together nine months now and she still checks her phone when I say I’m five minutes out.

If you want the takeaway without the spreadsheet: the app matters less than picking one where people actually write something, because that’s where you find out who’s funny before you ever meet them.
