A Real Story
After my divorce I did what any recovering project manager would do: I made a spreadsheet. Columns for Match, eHarmony, OkCupid, Plenty of Fish, and one called Silver Singles because a coworker swore by it. I logged every message sent, every open, every reply, every date scheduled. Two months in, I had sent 214 opening messages across all five sites and gotten 19 replies. Nineteen. I kept thinking the algorithm was broken or the photos were wrong, so I paid for professional headshots and rewrote my bio four times.
The breakthrough came from my sister, who I made the mistake of showing the spreadsheet to. She scrolled through my sent messages and pointed out that almost every single one was some version of “Hey, how’s your week going?” Nineteen replies out of 214 wasn’t a platform problem, it was a me problem. I was sending the dating equivalent of a form letter and wondering why nobody wrote back.
So I did an experiment I’m almost embarrassed to admit. For two weeks I only messaged women whose profiles mentioned something specific, a book, a dumb pun, a photo with a dog wearing sunglasses, and I referenced that exact thing in my first line. Reply rate jumped to something like 40 percent. I ended up going on eleven first dates over the following three months, all from OkCupid oddly enough, and I’m currently seeing someone I met because I asked her, unprompted, whether her cat photo was named after a Golden Girls character. It was. Rose.
The sites themselves didn’t change. I did. If you’re getting silence across every app, before you blame the algorithm, go read your last twenty messages back to back. If you can’t tell them apart, neither can the people receiving them.
