A Real Story
My roommate Priya kept telling me I’d never meet anyone if I stayed home rewatching Parks and Rec, so when she forwarded me a flyer for a ‘meet singles’ mixer at a wine bar downtown, I signed up mostly to have proof it was a scam. Thirty-five dollars got you a glass of house red and an index card where you were supposed to write three ‘conversation starters’ about yourself instead of your name, which felt gimmicky until I realized it meant nobody could Google-stalk anyone before actually talking to them.
I wrote ‘currently losing a fight with my landlord over a dead radiator’ as one of mine, and the guy across from me, card reading ‘my dishwasher has been broken since March and I’ve made peace with it,’ laughed so hard he knocked over his water. His name was Theo, he worked in HVAC repair which made the dishwasher thing almost insulting, and he spent a solid ten minutes explaining why he still hadn’t fixed his own appliance out of what he called ‘professional embarrassment.’ We didn’t exchange numbers that night because the organizer collected the cards at the end and mailed them back a week later with everyone’s actual contact info attached, which felt old-fashioned in a way I liked.
It’s been eleven months. He fixed my radiator situation before he ever fixed his dishwasher, which I still bring up. I went to that mixer expecting a receipt for a bad night out and left with someone who now leaves his tools in my hallway closet.
