I almost didn’t answer his profile prompt because it was so specific: ‘The Yelp review I regret writing.’ He’d typed out this unhinged three-star takedown of a taco truck that apparently ‘personally offended his ancestors.’ I sent him one line back — ‘What did the truck do to you’ — and he responded with a photo of the actual receipt, itemized, like evidence in a trial. That was the whole hook. No compliments, no small talk about how we were ‘both just looking for something real.’

We met at a diner near my apartment because neither of us wanted to commit to a real dinner reservation if it went badly. He showed up twelve minutes late because he’d stopped to help someone jump their car battery in the parking lot, which felt like a strange thing to lie about, so I believed him. We split a plate of mozzarella sticks and argued for forty-five minutes about whether ranch belongs on pizza. I remember thinking, this is either the most boring first date of my life or I like this person more than I expected to.

Three years later we still argue about condiments, and he still writes borderline unhinged Yelp reviews that I have to talk him out of posting. I deleted the app about two weeks after that first date, not because some algorithm nailed it, but because one dumb prompt gave me enough to work with to actually ask a real question instead of ‘hey how’s your week going.’
