His profile had five photos of him fly fishing in five different states and a bio that said, and I quote, exactly this: ‘wikipedia.org/wiki/Silt.’ No jokes, no height, no zodiac sign. Just that link. I sat there at 11pm scrolling Tinder in bed like everyone else, and I almost swiped left because I genuinely thought it was spam or a bot account testing the app.

Instead I swiped right and messaged ‘okay I’ll bite, why silt’ before I even matched with him properly through the algorithm’s usual delay. He responded within four minutes with an actual essay about sediment transport in river deltas, because he’s a hydrologist, which is a job I did not know existed until that Tuesday. We texted about riverbeds for two days straight before he asked if I wanted to get coffee, and he showed up to the date with a small jar of actual silt from a job site because he said he wanted proof he wasn’t lying.

We’ve been together eighteen months now and I still bring up the silt jar every time he tries to write something normal on his LinkedIn. What I took from it: the boring, safe Tinder bios never got me curious enough to type first. The weird one did all the work by making me ask a question instead of waiting for an opener, and honestly that’s probably the only real trick to the app — get someone curious enough that they message you before you have to message them.
