I was 26, drowning in nursing school debt, and tired of pretending ramen was a lifestyle choice. A friend from my cohort mentioned Seeking, half-joking, and I made a profile at 1 a.m. the same night out of pure spite toward my student loan servicer. I put together a document before I even opened my first message thread: minimum monthly allowance, how many dinners I could realistically fit around clinicals, and a hard line that nothing physical was happening before date four. It felt clinical writing it out, but I’d read enough Reddit horror stories to know vague expectations are where things rot.

The man I ended up seeing, I’ll call him R., was 54, ran a mid-size logistics company, and initiated the money conversation himself over text before we’d even met in person, which I now know is rare and I got lucky. We settled on $2,200 a month and two dinners, and he actually stuck to it without renegotiating downward three weeks in, which apparently happens a lot. Our first dinner was at a steakhouse where he ordered for both of us without asking, which annoyed me, so I told him directly, and he adjusted every time after that. It stopped feeling like a transaction and started feeling like a weird, lopsided friendship with better restaurants.

It ended after about eight months, not because of drama, but because he got a promotion that meant relocating, and neither of us pretended it was more than what it was. The lesson I actually took from it wasn’t about the money. It was that writing down my terms before I ever swiped or messaged anyone forced me to know my own limits, and that clarity is what kept me from the situations my friends warned me about, where nobody said the number out loud and everybody ended up resentful.
